Psychosis is defined as a disturbance in the perception of reality featuring delusions, hallucinations, thought, and behaviour disorganization. While psychosis is the predominant feature of several psychiatric disorders, many medical conditions can present with psychotic behaviour. Side effects of medications and substance use can also precipitate psychotic symptoms. In the ED the main goal is to recognize and differentiate psychosis due to a primary psychiatric disorder from organic brain syndromes.
