Somatoform and Factitious Disorders

CoverImage_SAFDSomatoform and factitious disorders are a challenging group of disorders that result in high healthcare utilization and frustration for both clinicians and patients.  In the ED the most important aspect is to ensure an organic etiology has been ruled out.  Diagnosis is rarely made on a first time ED visit and treatment is primarily conducted in primary healthcare setting, that offers continuity of care.
