Medications such as anti-psychotics and antidepressants play an important role in the management of psychiatric patients. As these patients are frequent visitors in the ED, it is important for the ED physician to recognize side effects associated with these pharmacologic agents. Certain side effects such as the extrapyramidal symptoms seen with antipsychotics are disturbing to the patient but not usually life threatening. However, both Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), and Serotonin Syndrome (SS) can be fatal if not recognized and treated properly.
