The majority of patients with community-acquired pneumonia are initially assessed and treated in the Emergency Department. Illness severity can vary greatly depending on the patient’s age and comorbidity. Mortality approaches 30% in high risk patients. This module will review the clinical presentation of pneumonia, discuss the ED work-up for a patient presenting with possible pneumonia, and summarize management guidelines.
