Bone disorders may range from self-limiting painful conditions in young athletes to infections which may be fatal. From the pre-antibiotic era to present times, mortality of osteomyelitis has dropped from 25% to less than 2%. Morbidity affecting quality of life is a significant factor in all bone disorders. Emergency room management must consider many risk factors for infection, from intravenous (IV) drug use to immunosuppression to post-surgery. Prompt initiation of appropriate treatment and referral to specialist care is crucial for certain patients.
