Healthcare workers in the Emergency Department are at a high risk of injury by violent and agitated patients. Up to 50% of healthcare workers are victims of violence during their career span. Identification of risk factors for violence and knowledge of management strategies of the agitated patient are important aspects of the practice of emergency medicine. These management strategies include: use of verbal intervention, use of physical restraint and/org pharmacological restraint, and identification of possible underlying causes for the agitated behaviour.
