Acute urinary retention is a frequently encountered urological emergency in the ED setting. Although benign prostatic hypertrophy is the most common cause, the differential diagnosis is extensive. Prompt bladder decompression and recognition of the underlying cause is paramount in alleviating pain and preventing morbidity. This module will outline the causes of acute urinary retention, review the ED management, and discuss complications related to bladder decompression.
